![]() ![]() ![]() Volvo has made its mission that “nobody should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020.”Įngine: 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged inline four-cylinder The other reason Volvo’s newest is more than notable is in its engineering: this is a monumentally safe car, a trait for which the Swedish brand is well known. It fits in equally well at a seaside Barcelona Hotel as it does in front of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia cathedral or the lush green, vertical peaks of Monserrat. (Since you’re wondering, the V90 Cross Country is the one to get, hands down.) It is stunningly beautiful amidst a background of bland competition - the sheet metal is outstanding, but inside design really shines, especially with the optional driftwood trim. In keeping with the brand’s new design language, the XC60 falls in line with the drop-dead gorgeous XC90 SUV as well as with the S90 sedan and V90 wagon variants. What the XC60 does well, it does extremely well. The new XC60 crossover continues most of that tradition, but falls far, far short in other respects. Indeed, my love for Volvo has continued and, along with Porsche and Land Rover, has created some of the best cars ever, so far as the car nuts are GP are concerned. The slotted head rests were, in my opinion, super neat. ![]() (I wonder what ever came of Suzy?) Boxy and upright, it seemed alien, even as I considered Fox Body Mustangs and sharp-edged, wedge-like supercars gorgeous. It has been since I was a kid and the neighbor girl would drive around in a blue 240 sedan. We’re yet to drive the V60 Cross Country in the UK, but based on how well it performed on frozen roads at -27deg C, I can’t see it falling apart when we do.Editor’s Note: Volvo hosted us on a trip to Barcelona, Spain, in order to fully experience the new XC60. ![]() There’s abundant leg and head room in the second row, even with an optional panoramic sunroof. It’s not short on boot space (529 litres) and its large aperture and low, lip-less floor make loading heavy kit in and out an easy task. I think it’ll be a rather impressive thing.Īnd a practical one. Obviously, road roar was more pronounced that it would have been on regular rubber, and secondary intrusions were sharper than normal but I have high hopes for the V60 Cross Country when it eventually arrives on UK soil. It also came across on our test drive as well isolated - even when fitted with studded snow tyres. Its calmer suspension calibration allows for plenty of cushioning when dealing with rolling road surfaces, but it’s not so soft that it feels overly wayward through bends, or loose over crests. I’d wager that’d be just as welcome when joining a roundabout in Slough as it was on the frozen roads of northern Sweden. There’s no ungainly shunting or wheelspin as you pull away from a standstill. It responds to gentle throttle inputs in an impressively delicate fashion. What I can tell you, though, is that the way in which this engine works with the eight-speed automatic transmission to direct torque to the wheels is impressively smooth. Is the V60 Cross Country a true off-roader?
